Hiroko Inoue

Hiroko Inoue studied law, politics and international relations at Tohoku University and Waseda University in Japan, as well as at Australian National University, and holds Bachelor of Law and Master of Law from Tohoku University.

T he focus of her PhD research is policy implementation by the UN Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) and its cultural impact on local society. The proposed title of the thesis is “Intersecting with a New Other: Identity Reconstruction in UNTAET’s East Timor.” Previously she published articles and book chapters, concerning transnational civil society and humanitarian discourse in international society, as well as on Timorese movements for human rights and self-determination (Available in Japanese).

She has taught social/political sciences and languages in secondary schools and universities as a part-time instructor; and has worked for various national and international NGOs, such as Oxfam GB, UNICEF Miyagi, and others as a volunteer worker. She also worked for the UN Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT) during presidential and parliamentary elections in Timor-Leste in 2007.
